Mass specific optical absorption coefficients of mineral dust components measured by a multi wavelength photoacoustic spectrometer

چکیده
Reviewers' comments: This manuscript describes the use of a four-wavelength (266 nm, 355 nm, 532 nm, 1064 nm) photoacoustic spectrometer to measure the absorption of various mineral dust (MD) components in aerosol form. The measured absorption values are combined with aerosol size distribution and mass measurements to derive mass specific absorption coefficients (MAC’s) for all seven components. These values could be of utility to others wishing to estimate absorption by mineral dust aerosols or, as the authors suggest, for comparing to bulk measurements. Comparisons to absorption redicted by Mie theory and based on previous (bulk) measurements of indices of refraction demonstrate general agreement between the two approaches but also indicate some discrepancy which may, or may not, be attributed to deficiencies in the methods used to make the bulk measurements.

Mass-specific optical absorption coefficients and imaginary part of the complex refractive indices of mineral dust components measured by a multi-wavelength photoacoustic spectrometer
Mass-specific optical absorption coefficients (MACs) and the imaginary part (κ) of the refractive indices of various mineral dust components including silicate clays (illite, kaolin and bentonite), oxides (quartz, hematite and rutile), and carbonate (limestone) were determined at the wavelengths of 1064, 532, 355 and 266 nm. The MAC values were calculated from aerosol optical absorption coeffic...

متن کاملOptical properties and mineralogical composition of different Saharan mineral dust samples: a laboratory study
In aerosol chamber experiments optical properties of resuspended mineral dust samples of defined size distributions were measured. Extinction coefficients (bext) and mass specific extinction cross sections (σext) were determined for Saharan dust samples from different locations. The results for σext were not very sensitive to the type of dust and varied at λ=550 nm between 3.3±0.4 m2 g−1 and 3....

A novel multi-wavelength photoacousticnephelometer spectrometer (SC-PNS) has been developed for the optical characterization of atmospheric aerosol particles. This instrument integrates a white light supercontinuum laser with photoacoustic and nephelometric spectroscopy to measure aerosol absorption and scattering coefficients at five wavelength bands (centered at 417, 475, 542, 607, and 675 nm...

A sensitive photoacoustic absorption spectrometer for highly transparent solids has been built and tested. As the light source an optical parametrical oscillator pumped by a nanosecond pulse laser with 10 Hz repetition rate is employed, covering the complete wavelength range from 407 to 2600 nm. A second-harmonic-generation unit extends the range of accessible wavelengths down to 212 nm. A lead...
